140 évvel ezelőtt 1884 február 29-én született Réth Alfréd. Az életművet álfogó, annak minden korszakát bemutató tárlattal tiszteleg a művész nagysága előtt a Kálmán Makláry Fine Arts Galéria.

A művész - nagybányai tanulmányai után - 1905-ben költözött Párizsba, ahol Jacques Émile Blanche lett a tanítómestere. Néhány hónap múlva azonban otthagyta Blanche-ot, s inkább Vollard műkereskedésébe jár, az itt függő Cézanne festmények kedvéért. 1910-től már a Salon d’Automne-ban és a Salon des Indépendants-ban szerepelnek a munkái, következő évben 1911-ben pedig részt vesz a kubisták legelső csoportos bemutatkozásán.1913-ban együtt állított ki Jean Metzingerrel, Berthe Weill művészettörténeti szempontból jelentős galériájában, amely a Párizsi Iskola színejavának munkáit mutatta be. Ugyanebben az évben a német modernizmus fő teoretikusának és organizátorának, Herwarth Waldennek felkérésére Berlinben, a „Der Sturm” galériában is kiállítása nyílott; a katalógus élén Reth művészi credoja olvasható: „Felismertem, milyen hiba lenne a látható valósághoz ragaszkodni. . . Azon fáradoztam, hogy az elemek arányát a látványtól függetlenül teremtsem meg a képen, egyedül a kompozíció szabályainak engedelmeskedve. A forma abszolút érvényét akartam megtalálni. . . ”  Az 1926-os nagy párizsi kubista kiállításon tíz képpel szerepelt, a 30-as években a Vantongerloo és Herbin által megalapított „Abstraction-Création” csoportnak lett prominens tagja. A második világháború után Réth a „Réalités Nouvelles” művészeti társulás tagja lesz; 1955-ben retrospektív kiállítására is sor kerül az Institut de France rendezésében; ugyanebben az évben az ismert művészeti író, Waldemar George tollából önálló kötet is megjelenik róla. George kis könyve e szavakkal zárul: „Réth - aki a kubizmustól az anyagok szigorú harmóniájáig jutott el - teljes művész."

A kiállítótérben sétálgatva szemükben tűnik alkotásainak sokszinűsége.

140 years ago, on 29 February 1884, Alfred Reth was born. Marking this anniversary, Kálmán Makláry Fine Arts Gallery pays tribute to the artist's exceptional legacy with a comprehensive exhibition spanning every major period of his oeuvre.

Following his studies at the Nagybánya artists' colony, Reth moved to Paris in 1905, where he initially studied under Jacques-Émile Blanche. After only a few months, however, he left Blanche's studio in favour of spending his days at Ambroise Vollard's gallery, captivated by the Cézanne paintings on display there. By 1910, his works were regularly exhibited at both the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, and in 1911 he participated in the Cubists' first collective exhibition. In 1913, he exhibited alongside Jean Metzinger at Berthe Weill's historically significant gallery, renowned for presenting the leading figures of the School of Paris. That same year, at the invitation of Herwarth Walden—the principal theorist and organiser of German Modernism—Reth held a solo exhibition at Berlin's legendary Der Sturm gallery. The catalogue opened with the artist's own artistic credo:

"I realised what a mistake it would be to remain attached to visible reality... I sought to establish the relationships between pictorial elements independently of appearances, guided solely by the laws of composition. I wanted to discover the absolute validity of form..."

At the major Paris Cubist exhibition of 1926, Reth was represented by ten paintings. During the 1930s, he became a prominent member of the Abstraction-Création group, founded by Georges Vantongerloo and Auguste Herbin. After the Second World War, he joined the Réalités Nouvelles association, and in 1955 the Institut de France organised a major retrospective of his work. That same year, the distinguished art historian and critic Waldemar George published the first monograph devoted to the artist, concluding with the following assessment:

"Reth—who progressed from Cubism to the rigorous harmony of materials—is a complete artist."

Moving through the exhibition, visitors encounter the remarkable breadth and evolution of Reth's artistic vision. The exhibition presents outstanding examples from his Cubist period, characteristic works of the 1920s, compositions from his Abstraction-Création years, and paintings from his celebrated Harmony of Materials series, revealing the coherence and continual reinvention that define his oeuvre.

The first monograph on Alfred Reth was published in 2003 by Kálmán Makláry, who has since organised a series of landmark exhibitions devoted to the artist in both Paris and Budapest. In recent years, Reth's Cubist works have established him among the most highly valued Hungarian artists on the international art market, with exceptional paintings from this period achieving prices of several hundred million Hungarian forints. Even so, his market remains significantly undervalued in comparison with those of his former Cubist contemporaries.
