"In 1970, Hantaï began working on his Watercolors, a series of small, mostly round canvases. The creation of the Watercolors and the screenprints belonging to the Massada series, made in the same year, are linked to a commission to design ceramic bowls. When working on the Watercolors series, Hantaï folded them in all directions and painted their surfaces with a multitude of pale shades of color, using watercolors. Geneviève Bonnefoi, who saw the Watercolors in Meun in the early 1970s, described them as “a mass of fragile rosettes that cover the lawn and transform the garden of the house into a strange, oneiric Japanese landscape. "1970-ben Hantaï az Akvarelleken, egy kisméretű, többségében kerek vásznakból álló sorozatán kezdett dolgozni. Az Akvarellek és az ugyanabban az évben készült Massada sorozathoz tartozó szitanyomatok elkészítése egy kerámiatálak tervezésére szóló megbízáshoz fűződik. Amikor az Akvarellek -sorozaton dolgozott, Hantaï minden irányban meghajtogatta és halvány színárnyalatok sokaságával, akvarellel festette meg felületüket. Geneviève Bonnefoi, aki az 1970-es évek elején látta az Akvarelleket Meunben, így írta le azokat: „egy halom törékeny rozetta, amely elborítja a gyepet, s különös, onirikus japán tájjá változtatja a ház kertjét.
